About House of Bagels

American bakeries range from wholesale operations that supply restaurants to neighborhood shops that sell bread, pastries, cookies and cakes over the counter, and many of them also pour coffee. Bagel shops boil and bake on site and sell out of favorite flavors by late morning; donut shops open before dawn and are often family-run; patisseries and cake studios take custom orders for weddings and birthdays and usually need one to two weeks' notice. Ice cream parlors, gelato shops and frozen yogurt bars are seasonal in the northern states and year-round in the South and on the West Coast. Prices are posted per item, by the dozen or by the pound, and most shops now take cards and mobile payment.

Hours are published for 6 days a week. The most common schedule is 7:30 am–2 pm. Note that it does not open on Monday. Hours in the United States do change around federal holidays and long weekends, so a quick call before a special trip is sensible. The listed phone number is (510) 338-1189. Many businesses also reply to text messages on the same number if it is a cell phone.

Its Google rating is 4.1 out of 5 from 63 reviews, a solid but mixed picture; reading the most recent reviews will tell you what to expect.

This place needs a deep clean and the prices need to come back down to earth because an egg and cheese bagel should not cost $12. It was small, not filling, and I didn’t see or taste any cheese on it. Both SF and NYC have cheaper bagel sandwiches. I was the only one in there and it was oddly dark. The egg was microwaved in a plastic container right in front of me. The store looks dirty and outdated. I will not be returning with these high prices and low food quality and prep standards

Likely the worst breakfast bagels I've ever had, dont bother.

Not a happy place, very depressing space and outdated. The lady at the counter had a hard time taking/understanding our order and was very stingy with the ingredients on the lox bagel. $29 later for 2 bagels. Very expensive and overrated IMO. The food made me feel a bit sick with nausea, I am not sure how fresh or what kind of lox or schmear they use. I tried to get a schmear from their fridge but everything is whipped and costs too much for a tiny container, with no dates on it.

Very good bagels, run by a very nice family. The atmosphere is clean, but not somewhere that's very inviting to eat. Since the pandemic, I haven't seen literally anybody eating here. People just get their stuff to go. That said, they make proper boiled bagels fresh every day. They're chewy and crisp when toasted, which is exactly how a bagel should be. I'm a lox guy, and they've only ever served me good, fresh lox. This is an important detail. Tons of bagel places serve fishy lox that you can tell hasn't been properly refrigerated or stored. This is never the case at house of bagels. To be honest, I've kind of had an addiction to this place. I go on jags where I get a bagel there 4 times a week....one last thing: try the pastrami bagel. It's delicious.

I feel bad for this place. They make some of the best, authentic NYC bagels anywhere. Much better than some of the better known shops. But they are family run, and they seem burned out. They have been robbed a few times and I think that would sap the spirit from anyone. These days, they only stay open until 2pm, and run out of many flavors long before. The poor woman at the counter seems like she'd rather be anywhere else. But they still make great bagels! So I go by whenever I can go early in the day and stock up. They are almost as good after freezing.
